This page contains all the information you need on the Free Friday Workouts.
I do these for several reasons, some of which are explained below but mostly because they are fun. Training outside, under the sun is good for you in many ways. It’s likely VERY different from any type of training you’ve done before. And, it’s Becoming Indestructible compliant (why wouldn’t it be?).
Times and Locations
Workouts are held every Friday, starting at 12:30 pm (that’s just after lunch, for you AM/PM strugglers). Hard rain is the only thing that will cancel it. I will be there even during a light rain. So if you’re a trooper, come troop with me. Last year, we only cancelled one due to weather. Friday, December 4, remember what happened that day? Snow! Other than that, we meet. Of course if I am traveling workouts aren’t scheduled, so those can’t be cancelled
.
We meet in one of the soccer fields at Lost Creek park in Sugar Land, TX. Here is a map with directions. The park is just north of Highway 6, right off Settler’s Way Blvd – you can even get there from Oyster Creek park, which is on Highway 6.
I get there about 15 minutes early and will be on a field with my stuff (see next). So look around, find me and join in.
What to Bring?
We use some combination of these during the workouts: medicine ball, dumb bells and resistance tubes. If you have any or all of these, bring them. I have extras, mostly resistance tubes and medicine balls. I don’t bring the extras, unless you contact me (email AT briansekula DOT com) and let me know you’re coming.
Bring water. You’ll get thirsty and the water fountain is too far.
Bring a towel. You’ll get sweaty and likely a little dirty
You can bring your iPod too.
Optional: shoes, I usually workout barefooted on the field.
What to expect…
For a typical workout, we’d use the medicine ball about 60% of the time. Regardless of equipment, the objective is to improve body function and movement. We also train at fairly high intensity, which helps all of those Becoming Indestructible principles regarding exercise.
Last year when I did this, without posting it to my blog or anywhere else, about 10 people showed up regularly. I think 16 was the most.
Oh…do I have too?
Said in a spider web voice: Whining, Excuses, Blaming (the “B” is for blaming because this is a PG site, save for this post).
You don’t have to do anything while there. You can stand and watch. You can rest when you need it. You can leave early. Last year, an elderly gentleman (I’m guessing late 60’s, early 70’s) would stand at the far end and do everything we did, without equipment. Just the movements. I’m sure it helped. He was very stealth. He’d disappear just before the workout was over. Never had a chance to talk to him.
